designer colours in 2021

The colours you’ll see in 2021

Yes, it’s that time of year when homeowners with plans for redecoration or renovation start thinking about what paint colours are set to be popular in the coming year. With this in mind, no matter whether you are planning on giving your home a coat of paint in preparation for putting it on the market, or just updating your home to give it a fresh look after a challenging year, we did some research among the interior thought leaders both here and overseas to see what they’re forecasting on paint colours that are expected to make an impact in 2021.

Obviously, your final choices as a renovator or decorator will depend on your overall styling themes, but here’s a summary of three trends you’re likely to encounter.

Neutrals with warmth. If you’ve had enough of white walls, but still want to keep a neutral palette, you may find that shades like warm taupe can add depth to a space whilst providing a contrast with black highlights, which are tipped to trend strongly this year. The soft skin tones of taupe can also work well as a link between rooms where you use some warm blues, greens, or grey shades.

Adding some drama. As we mentioned above, quite a few interior designers are expecting black to become more popular as a way of adding a dramatic highlight. So don’t be surprised if you see black taking a more prominent role in areas like contemporary kitchens and bathrooms. One bonus is that, like white, black works with almost any other colour you can use.

Calm after the storm. There seems to be a consensus among many designers that people will be looking for a calming influence in their colour choices after the upheaval of 2020, so expect to a continuing influence of calming greens, a colour that promotes relaxation and cosiness, and serene blues.

Whilst these key themes are all worth thinking about, it is important to remember that the best enhancement of all if you are thinking of selling in the near future is experienced professional advice. You might even find that your property could be more marketable in its current condition without spending the time and money on a paint job.
